I believe that freedom of speech is a big debate. There are times when you should be allowed to express your feelings and share what you feel; however, sometimes it can be taken too far. For example, students should not get away with posting blogs about teachers over the internet. It is absolutely unecessary and didn't need to occur. This student would have been able to talk to a friend or even the principle about what had happened instead of posting a blog on the computer. The student was only looking for attention.

I believe that schools have the right to penalize students for what is said online. Whether it is for an out of school topic or in school, the violence that is stirred up can be brought into school. Posting things on the internet is a foolish thing to do. Anyone has access to what you post. Students can easily gossip to their friends in person, but there is no need to exchange cruel words over a public site. It is a very immature thing to do and schools should have the ability to penalize students for it. Also, these situations cause faculty to be uncomfortable in their job environment.

Internet speech has limits. Things that have no downfalls can be said. For example, compliments on the internet can be shared. Any threats, vulgar language, or negative comments should be left off the internet. Anyone is able to view the comments that you leave so why put something that can get you in trouble? It is immature to post certain things on the internet. The people who do this are only looking for attention.

Schools should not have the right to limit student expression. Students should be able to express themselves as much as they have to, but in the appropriate way. The school administration can help students by listening to what they have to say. If the faculty listen to students it will prevent them from gossiping over the internet. This will not only solve the problem, but stop other situations from arising.

Freedom of speech is a powerful thing. Yes, people should have the right to say what they want, but they should be responsible and share the information with people they trust. Just because you have freedom to speak doesn't mean you should share your business with the world.
